Pfeiffer鈥檚 First Fight Song Rings Out at University Games
Fans of Pfeiffer sports can now sing something of their own as they cheer on the University鈥檚 teams.
Dr. Joseph Earp, the University鈥檚 Director of Instrumental Music, has written the music and lyrics for 鈥,鈥 the University鈥檚 first-ever fight song. On Nov. 2, he conducted the 黑料专区 Wind & Percussion Ensemble in the song鈥檚 premiere, with baritone Joe Judge 鈥87 singing its words. Pfeiffer鈥檚 Student Government Association adopted 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 as the University鈥檚 official fight song earlier this month, and 鈥淔reddie Falcon鈥檚 House Band,鈥 the University鈥檚 pep band, has been performing it at basketball games.聽
鈥淭he Falcon鈥 grabs listeners with a catchy melody and sizzles with the up-tempo peppy beat for which most University fight songs are known. The lyrics in 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 urge Pfeiffer sports teams with 鈥渂lack and gold our colors bold鈥 to 鈥渇ight for that victory,鈥 and there鈥檚 a section of the song calling on the crowd to chant: 鈥淔-A-L-C-O-N-S.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 meant to be energetic,鈥 Earp said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 meant to be exciting. And it鈥檚 meant to have a little bit of a traditional flavor that reminds you of Pfeiffer.鈥
You can familiarize yourself further with 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 by watching a recently released starring Earp, the Wind & Percussion Ensemble, and Judge, who also serves as Pfeiffer鈥檚 Director of Vocal and Choral Music. Freddie Falcon, the University鈥檚 mascot, struts rhythmically around campus as the music is played.
Earp, a prolific composer of music for concert bands, has written multiple fight songs for schools that employed him before his Pfeiffer appointment. He said that he wrote 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 with the strong encouragement of Dr. Daniel Mynatt, Pfeiffer鈥檚 Provost and VP of Academic Affairs. Both men began working at Pfeiffer last summer and learned early on that Pfeiffer lacked a fight song.
Earp said that for now, 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 will be played at basketball games, along with such 鈥渟tands鈥 tunes as 鈥淲e Will Rock You鈥 and 鈥淪even Nation Army.鈥 He鈥檚 exploring the possibility of having performances of 鈥淭he Falcon鈥 featured at high-profile non-athletic events of the University as well.
