Faculty Spotlight – Dr. Doug Hume
Meet Dr. Doug Hume, Pfeiffer鈥檚 Professor of Religion and Chair of the Department of Humanities. Dr. Hume has been at Pfeiffer for 17 years, teaching a variety of courses including New Testament, Old Testament, Letters of Paul, Luke-Acts, Bible and Quran, Jesus and the Movies, Vocation and Servant Leadership, Friendship in the New Testament, Great Books, The Beloved Community, and Ethical Debate.
Dr. Hume has always had a love for studying texts in depth, learning about history and linguistics, and figuring out how to apply everything he learns to everyday life. This appreciation for learning is what sparked his interest in his field.
When asked what he would like for his students to take away from his classes, Dr. Hume said, 鈥淚 want students to experience awe at the human experience, and expressions of the divine in texts. I want them to think critically about the Bible and other religious texts. I want them to be prepared to be citizens of the world.鈥�
During his professional career, Dr. Hume has published two books and multiple articles. He served as President of Southeastern Region of the Society of Biblical Literature and as Chair of the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion. He currently also serves part-time at a small United Methodist church, where he preaches and leads worship.
