Faculty Spotlight – Dr. Angela Kern
Meet Dr. Angela Kern, Pfeiffer鈥檚 Professor of Education, Coordinator of Online Elementary Education, and Coordinator Gifted Education Licensure. Dr. Kern has been teaching for 28 years. She currently teaches Reading Methods, Arts with Children, Social Studies Methods, and Introduction to Gifted Education.
Dr. Kern says that her grandmother taught for 50+ years, which is what inspired her to become a teacher herself. Dr. Kern attended NC State University on a Teaching Fellows Scholarship, and eventually went on to teach a wide range of grades, from elementary to college.
Dr. Kern wants her students to take away a love for learning from her classes. 鈥淟earning doesn鈥檛 end when you leave college. Learning is life-long. Read, participate in the arts, travel. There is so much to learn about this life!鈥� said Dr. Kern.
Dr. Kern has many achievements and accomplishments relating to her field; she is a National Board-Certified Teacher, has presented at 70+ conferences, and was named Asheboro City School Teacher of the Year. In addition to being a graduate of NC State, she also is a graduate of UNC Greensboro and UNC Chapel Hill.
When asked about recent changes in her field, Dr. Kern said, 鈥淭he state of North Carolina is restructuring the way they teach reading based on the Science of Reading. I have taken LETRS training, Reading Research to Classroom Practice, and Letterland!鈥�
Dr. Kern is married to her husband, John. She is a mother to two college-aged daughters, Maggie and Carlie, who are studying at NC State and UNC Chapel Hill, respectively.
